📈Easy Wins, Hard Losses

Everyone has things they know they should either, do more of or don’t do at all in order to level up. Sometimes, we struggle to get started because the task seems overwhelming or too difficult. In these cases, adjusting the friction towards the activity can make all the difference.

While these productivity tips may seem obvious, implementing them can have a significant impact on one's ability to achieve their goals and improve their productivity.

Make it easy to win…

My friend David always wanted to start reading more books, but he found it challenging to make it a regular habit

He knew that reading would benefit him, but he struggled to motivate himself to pick up a book every day. So, he decided to adjust the friction towards the activity.

Instead of trying to read a book for an hour each day, he started small by reading just 10 pages every morning. He also made sure to place the book he was reading next to his bed, so he would see it first thing when he woke up.

By reducing the friction towards reading, David was able to make it a consistent habit, and before he knew it, he was reading more books than he ever had.

Make it hard to lose…

If you know you need to eat more healthy foods and less snacks. Try getting rid of all the snacks in your home or making them non-accessible.

By increasing the friction to snack on unhealthy foods, you'll be forced to look for alternatives and reach for fruits instead of Cheetos.

Adjusting the friction towards an activity can help us to make better choices and establish new habits.

By making it easier to do the things we know we should be doing, we can achieve our goals and elevate.

🧠Actionable steps

  1. Make it easy to win

To form good habits, make wins easy by reducing the friction towards the activity. For example, if you struggle to go to the gym regularly, choose a gym that's closer to your home so it's more convenient to get there.

  2. Make it hard to lose

To get rid of bad habits, make losses hard by increasing the friction towards the activity. For instance, if you want to eat fewer unhealthy snacks, remove them from your home so they're not easily accessible, making it more difficult to reach for them.
